About seven or eight years ago, a group of friends and interested individuals came together to discuss the growing health problems in Colville, and in our nation. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, addictions, arthritis, high blood pressure all were growing concerns. We decided to address these important health issues locally, since we were convinced that the most effective way of changing anything for the better is a committed small group of people. We decided it was time to change the health of Colville. We would do this through a grassroots, community based lifestyle changing health initiative. We would call ourselves GetFitColville.
Since we started, GetFitColville accomplished a number of important things. We’ve lost over 7,000 lbs. as a community. We’ve held community meetings, published newspaper articles, held extreme health makeovers, cooked food, given lectures, introduced healthy recipes, sponsored garden plots, inspired other communities, given out prizes, partnered with like-minded community groups, provided challenges, and more.
As time moved on, our core leadership group grew smaller and smaller as did our community participation and funding. This year we made the difficult decision that this would be the last year we would have any formal programming. We decided would keep the website and Facebook page going as best we could. We also will be available to assist anyone who may want to take this program and run with it. Does this mean that we are no longer committed to the health of our community? NO---we are still just as committed but have found that individual commitment to community change, must also have the support of the community and key community leaders if the change is to be permanent.
We would like to invite EVERYONE to our final Get Fit Colville Celebration. It will take place on June 17 at 630 pm the Rotary Pavilion in Yep Kanum Park. We will be celebrating past and current successes. Participants in the 2013-2014 Weight Loss Challenge will be awarded their $1/pound lost checks. We also will be sharing information about community resources.
Thank you to everyone who has participated in this great adventure during the past 8 years! AND a special thank you to Dr. Barry Bacon----without his leadership and dedication we would not have been able to accomplish all that we have!
